What is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation pediatric dentistry is the use of safe, mild sedatives to calm anxiety while your child receives dental care. Each child is different, and in some cases, sedation may be advisable. Our pediatric dentists are well-versed in the best methods for kids and what situations may call for sedation. As always, we will discuss all such methods with parents before any treatment.

For example, some kids have a strong gag reflex that makes treatment challenging. In other cases, kids may need multiple treatments at once. Lastly, in cases where kids are very anxious, their safety can be ensured with gentle sedation thanks to pediatric dentist anesthesia. Through our effective sedation dentistry for kids, we can complete our seamless operations in just one visit.

Types of Sedation

Below are the types of sedation pediatric dentistry we provide to ensure your child receives the best care without undue stress.

Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)

Widely referred to as laughing gas, nitrous oxide is very safe, effective, and common pediatric dentist anesthesia for relaxing people of all ages. A mask is placed on the child so that the gas can be inhaled through the nose. The colorless, odorless gas is mixed with oxygen, and your child can breathe normally. Within a few minutes, it will take effect, but the child will remain awake.

Generally, the gas creates a happy, relaxed feeling and may cause a tingling sensation. While undergoing treatment, children are comfortable and calm. When the mask is removed, the effects wear off quickly.

IV Sedation

In some cases, IV sedation is recommended. In such instances, we will instruct you on steps to take from home before you come in for the appointment. This general anaesthesia allows kids to sleep comfortably while receiving treatment.

During longer treatment, in high anxiety cases or children with special needs, IV sedation may be recommended. As always, we will discuss all options with parents and address any questions or concerns.

Oral Sedation

Another sedation method is oral sedation taken by mouth or through the nose. In these cases, the doctor will have your child take medicine when they arrive, and it begins to take effect in about 20 minutes. In such cases, we may ask that your child does not eat or drink after midnight before your appointment.

Oral sedation can induce drowsiness to help keep kids calm during the procedure.

When Is Sedation Recommended?

We will take many factors into account before recommending sedation, such as age, behavior and the treatment in question. Before treatment, we will consult with parents and talk about all questions and concerns.
